Mário Delgado

He’s not the baseball player that the Americans love so much and he’s not the writer from Uruguay that likes to be involved in noble causes. Even if he has good instincts like the first and the vision of the second, this Mário Delgado is Portuguese and guitarrist, one of the more aclaimed in the new capital of universal jazz: Lisbon.

With classical studies, he learned to jazz in the school of the Hot Club of Portugal, and in this concert space he had the oportunity to play with many jazz giants from the States during their stay in this country. He frequented workshops with the likes of Bill Frisel, John Abercrombie, Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrel and Derek Bailey. You can’t hope for better training.

The Nineties found him interpreting standards, the mainstream ones but also some from the avant garde scene. Transforming them in his own thing is a very strugled for pleasure he takes. In the change of the millenium he focused on his original compositions, namely in the context of Filactera, a project inspired in the world of comics. It was his definitive consagration: his Filactera quintet was voted best jazz Portuguese group for 2001, thanks to the very elegant free bop he proposes, with hints of rock and rhythm and blues, Be it hard driven or having the form of a balad.

Another very well received project has his name and conviction on it: TGB, an unusual trio of tuba, guitar and drums with a strong New Orleans feel.
